Weekend rains cause flooding in Southern Belize

HeadlineWeekend rains cause flooding in Southern Belize

JACINTOVILLE, Toledo District, Mon. Aug. 27, 2018– Several streets in Belize City underwent overnight flooding yesterday due to incessant rains brought by a tropical wave passing over the country, but the roads in Jacintoville, which is about 8 miles outside of Punta Gorda, were impassable.

The Ministry of Transport and National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) issued a press release yesterday declaring the highway at Jacintoville, near the bridge, impassable. Motorists were cautioned against attempting to travel along the road.

Fortunately, as the day went on, the flood waters slowly receded and by 10 a.m. motorists were being allowed to pass again, but with caution, since there was still some flooding on the highway and the forecast predicted more showers over the course of the day.

As mentioned before, some areas of Belize, such as the Pound Yard area and the area around Radisson Fort George Hotel and Marina, were also affected by flooding.

According to the National Meteorological Service, cloudy weather and showers are expected over the course of today but mainly over inland areas; however, tonight and tomorrow morning the south and coastal areas should expect showers.

Rainy weather is also expected for the rest of the week. According to the National Meteorological Service, there is still a flood alert for flood prone areas, especially in the south, so residents should be cautious.

Back in 2016, Jacintoville also saw flooding during a tropical wave, while Aguacate, another village in Toledo, was inaccessible, with flood waters being 15 feet above the bridge.
