SANTA ELENA, Cayo District, Tues. Jan. 28, 2020– Omar Ibanez, 25, a cab driver of Cotton Tree, Cayo District, has been remanded, after being charged with 5 counts of illicit trafficking of firearms and keeping ammunition without a license.
While conducting a vehicle checkpoint (VCP) at Red Creek in Santa Elena at about 9:00 Sunday night, police searched a car and found five 9mm pistols and 300 9mm rounds inside.
Driving the car at the time was Omar Ibanez.
Ibanez was arraigned on the offenses today at the San Ignacio Magistrate’s Court.
Police said that the guns and ammunition were found in the bumper of the Toyota Camry in which Ibanez was traveling from San Ignacio to Cotton Tree.
Ibanez could not present a permit authorizing him to be in possession of the guns and ammunition. Also, one of the pistols had been reported stolen in Guatemala.
