BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Aug. 27, 2020– Yinghui Zhen, 32, a Chinese businessman of a Central American Boulevard address, has been remanded until October 5, on charges of possessing a firearm while under the influence of alcohol and refusing to provide a blood sample for analysis.
Zhen was taken yesterday to court, where he appeared before Magistrate Stephanie Gillett, who read the charges to him, and informed him that bail could not be granted for the offense, and directed him to apply to the Supreme Court for bail.
Zhen’s family has since obtained an attorney to represent him. Police said that on Sunday evening, they were patrolling on Barrack Road when a vehicle took a curve from Craig Street into Barrack Road, causing the police driver to have to maneuver his vehicle to avoid a collision.
Police quickly stopped the driver, and that was when they found a 9mm pistol in the vehicle. They then took Zhen to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital to be tested so that it could be determined whether alcohol in his blood was above the legal level, but Zhen refused to allow a sample of blood to be taken from him.
He was then taken to the police station and charged.
