BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Oct. 1, 2020– Belizean Deon Bruce is a free man once again, after 7 years of being in prison trying to resist an attempt by the US Government to extradite him on a slew of charges — first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated use of a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon, and possession of a weapon by a felon.
American law enforcement officials say that Bruce killed an American, Aaron Carter, in a shooting incident.
Bruce’s fight to regain his freedom began in July 2013, when the Magistrate’s Court ordered his extradition and he was jailed, and that fight went to the Supreme Court. Bruce fought back by way of a judicial review and habeas corpus proceedings, which both failed.
He was finally freed by the Court of Appeal, through the efforts of his attorney, Anthony Sylvestre.
