BELIZE CITY, Fri. Jan. 15, 2021– On Friday, January 15, the United Democratic Party issued a press release calling for the Briceño administration to set a date for the end of the indefinite curfew that is currently in place. The Opposition further urged the Government to revisit the present quarantine measures and update them, in order to “better reflect the situation on the ground”.

The UDP release says that the PUP government lacks a plan to combat the coronavirus within the country. It commented that this most current curfew is the first to be implemented without the declaration of a State of Emergency and that, as a result, it (the curfew) is “arguably unconstitutional.” The release further pointed out that this is the first of the country’s COVID-19- related curfews that has no end date.

The release states, “Not only may it be unconstitutional to implement an indefinite curfew, but it is also inconsiderate of business owners and workers who normally operate and thrive outside the hours of the curfew currently in effect. It forces them to operate like this PUP Administration, without a plan.”
