Morning jogger, “Gellies” Young pepper sprayed by cop

BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Jan. 28, 2021– Well-known Over-40 football star, Steve “Gellies” Young told WUB host Nuri Muhammad last Friday morning, that he had just been pepper sprayed by a misguided Police officer who accosted him while he was taking his usual morning run in the city. Gellies said the law provides for him to not use a face-mask while jogging, and he told the officer as much; but the officer was undeterred, and proceeded to pepper spray him in his face, causing severe burning to his eyes. The host advised Gellies to make an official report at the Racoon Street Police Station; which he said he would do.

And just yesterday, there were news reports of some national team football players training in Cayo being charged by Police for breaking Covid-19 rules.

With no competitive sports taking place due to the Covid-19 restrictions, some athletes try to stay in shape by running or cycling alone which, to our understanding, is permitted by law without the use of face masks. However, training in groups with close contact is still not permitted by law; and with the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in March, the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) is hoping for a relaxing of the restrictions sometime soon.
