Nuri Muhammad reflects on passing of Saeed Assales, Yabra footballer of the 1980s

SportsNuri Muhammad reflects on passing of Saeed Assales, Yabra footballer of the 1980s

BELIZE CITY, Wed. Mar. 3, 2021– The decades have flown by, and today we were informed by Nuri Muhammad of the passing of Saeed Assales, a clear skinned Muslim brother who played a good midfield with the Yabra Sporting Club football team in the early 1980s. Like Lockey, who had come from England and joined the Spurs Football Club for a couple years in the early 1970s and then returned home to England, we hadn’t seen Saeed for decades, and assumed that he had probably returned to wherever he had come from. Not so; as Nuri explains in his reflection, the Argentina born Saeed has been here all the while, and had woven himself deeply and permanently into our Belizean culture and heritage.

According to an attached note from Nuri, “…our brother Saeed Abdul Karim Assales returned to Allah this past Sunday.”

From the sports desk, our sincere condolences to his family, relatives and friends. Respect, and Rest In Peace, our Belizean brother, Saeed Assales!

Nuri’s Reflection can be found on page 22 of this issue.
