Detainee shot by police

GeneralDetainee shot by police

BELIZE CITY, Sat. Mar. 20, 2021– A Belize City police officer connected to Precinct 2 shot a detainee who was allegedly trying to escape from police custody on Saturday evening. According to reports, around 6:00 p.m. Ryan Foster, 26, was escorted by police outside the cellblock so that he could wash his hands.

That is when he attempted his daring escape from police custody.

An officer on duty fired a single shot to prevent the possible escape of the detainee, who has since been hospitalized and is currently in a stable condition.

One expended 9 mm shell was recovered from the scene.

While being questioned by members of the media on Monday, police said that their evidence revealed that excessive force was used in the detention of Foster. He was reportedly shot in the neck by an officer who was on duty. This officer has since been detained pending charges. The officer who took him to wash his hands has been detained as well. This officer allegedly gave police a different version of the incident which could not be corroborated by investigators.

An investigation into this incident continues.
