BELMOPAN, Sat. Apr. 10, 2021– Elvia Vega-Samos, who defeated the UDP’s Hilberto Campos in a by-election in Corozal Bay in early March, was sworn in as area rep during Friday’s House meeting, the first held in two months.

Samos was selected as a PUP candidate in that division after the death of her brother, David “Dido” Vega, who lost his life as a result of COVID-19 complications just days after unseating Corozal Bay’s former area representative, Pablo Marin.

“Today is a very important day for Corozalenos. As you see, they are here today in full support, and I will forever be thankful to all of them.” Hon. Samos remarked on Friday,

She added, “As I always mention, it’s not only a man’s world, but it’s a woman’s world as well, and I am here to work. I am here to represent the people of Corozal Bay, to be the voice that they truly deserve to have.”

During his budget presentation, the Prime Minister, Hon. John Briceño, remarked, “On this side of the House, we grieve for our colleague and friend from Corozal Bay, the late David Vega, who left us far too early. To the new Representative from Corozal Bay, the Hon. Elvia Vega-Samos, Dido Vega’s sister, we offer first our solidarity and of course our congratulations and full support.”

Elvia Vega-Samos became the fifth woman in the National Assembly following her swearing-in.
