BELMOPAN, Thurs. Apr. 22, 2021– The leadership of the Nurses Association of Belize (NAB) joined members of the PSU and BNTU in protest at the National Assembly today. While the parliamentarians were carrying on the budget debate, the nurses were outside demanding a total change in our governance.

“We the people need to demand a change in our government, nuh fi change the government; we tired a change government — yo change monkey or get black dog. We want the government to change; we don’t want to change the government,” the president of the Nurses Association of Belize, Darrell Spencer, remarked.

He sported a bukut painted red and blue, symbolizing the effects of the near 40 years during which the country has been subject to the decisions of “PUDP” governments.

“Well bukut here, represent what Belizeans taking for the past 40 years, two decades nearly ah UDP, two decades nearly ah PUP, and all weh we get da bukut. We need fi stop tek bukut,” he said.

He went on to say that the Government needs to get the relevant good governance laws in place to curb the wasteful practices of the Government, and he stated that no salary cuts would bring any relief if these reforms are not implemented.

“No cut for nobody! We are all important here and, like I just said, who get cut and how they get cut is hardly important. Any degree of salary cut is useless with a wasteful government,” Spencer said.

The vice president of the NAB, Alberta Flowers, added, “Salary cut is not the answer. Imagine, what us as nurses go through every day. We sacrifice a lot for our country and our patients. So for them to say that we don’t have talent…[the] audacity in them.”
