Boundaries of district towns might change

GeneralBoundaries of district towns might change

BELIZE CITY, Mon. July 26, 2021– The boundaries of the district towns of Dangriga, Corozal, Orange Walk, San Pedro, San Ignacio/Santa Elena, Benque Viejo, and Punta Gorda are expected to be changed in some way or the other, as a result of a decision recently made by the government. In a Cabinet brief released last week, the Briceño administration informed the public that they have approved an exercise to re-delineate the municipal boundaries of the seven district towns in Belize.

Cabinet indicated in the brief that the decision was a response to a request made by the Belize Mayors Association as far back as 2012, for the re-delineation of the current municipal boundaries.

For years, the residents of the areas in the vicinity of the seven district towns have called for services to be rendered to their communities, despite their location outside the prescribed boundaries of the towns.

Mayors of the various district towns have been unable to collect taxes from those persons who reside beyond the town’s limits, and businesses operating in the areas outside those limits have also been able to evade trade license taxes.
