Tropical disturbance to bring weekend rain

BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Sept. 2, 2021– A tropical disturbance currently over northeastern Nicaragua may bring showers our way this weekend, as it moves along its projected path over the western Caribbean Sea past Belize and into the Gulf of Mexico.

According to the 2:00 p.m. reports of the National Hurricane Center, portions of the area of low circulation could move over the Gulf of Honduras on Friday. This will likely cause showers over the country. “Heavy rains are possible across portions of Central America and the Yucatan Peninsula through the weekend,” the advisory from the National Hurricane Center states.

The system could be in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico by early next week, but is expected to encounter upper-level winds that will further limit significant development.

Chances of development for this system are relatively low at 10 to 20 percent over the next five days.

Also in the Atlantic, Hurricane Larry is barreling toward the continental US over open waters. As of this afternoon, it was located over the eastern tropical Atlantic, several hundred miles west of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands. The storm is moving westward at 17 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 70 knots.
