The National Sports Council’s (NSC) Sports Competition for Recreation and Wellness Basketball Tournament 2022, which tipped off back on March 18, culminated with its championship game on Friday night, July 1, at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City, where the Belize City Council “Dragons” defeated National Sports Council “Valley” by a 62-47 score.
Twelve (12) teams participated in the tournament, 6 in Group A and 6 in Group B, and it was the Group A champions, Belize City Council “Dragons” facing the Group B champions, National Sports Council “Valley” in the final. Other Group A teams included Belize Healthcare “Shooting Stars”, Belize Tax Services “Kollectaz”, Belize Defence Force “Snipers”, Digi, and Customs & Excise Department; while other Group B teams were Department of Youth Services, K.H.M.H. “Injectors”, Central Bank, BWS, and Bowen & Bowen “Belikin Bruwers”. Only employees of the firms/departments were allowed to participate in the tournament.
A curious note is that former semipro football star, Jarret Davis was top scorer for Valley in their Group B finals victory, while a current 1st Division football star, Steven Baizar also top scored for Valley in their tournament championship loss to BCC Dragons on Friday night.
A preliminary on Friday night featured a match from the Belize City branch of the National Basketball Tournament, where in the Open category, Complex Titans defeated Trucker’s Posse, 79-70.
The nightcap NSC Recreation & Wellness Basketball Championship game saw Belize City Council “Dragons” coming away with the 62-47 victory over National Sports Council “Valley”. Semipro basketball star Devin Daly top scored for the BCC Dragons with 19 pts, while football star Steven Baizar also had 19 points in the loss for NSC Valley.
Final tournament results: 1st Place – Belize City Council “Dragons”; 2nd Place – National Sports Council “Valley”; and 3rd Place – Digi.
