A new Contractor General was sworn in before H.E. Dame Froyla Tzalam, Governor General of Belize, in Belmopan at the Belize House on Thursday, May 25.

As the country’s newly appointed Contractor General, Maria Arthurs, 38, will be responsible for monitoring the award and implementation of public contracts to ensure their conformity with procurement-related rules and laws.

During last Friday’s House of Representatives meeting, a motion was passed appointing Arthurs to succeed the previous Contractor General, Omar Mitchell, who reached the retirement age of 70 and held the position since February 2020.

Arthurs is a career public officer and, prior to her new appointment, served as an Economist at the Caribbean Development Bank and the InterAmerican Development Bank. Also, she currently sits on the board of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, as well as the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and is a member of the National Environmental Appraisal Committee and the National Road Safety Committee.

Starting June 1, Arthurs will assume her responsibilities as Contractor General for a term of three years.

Arthurs holds a Master’s Degree in Finance from Galen University.
