FeaturesEducate the Belizean people and stop copying others

At no time is it my intention to offend anyone, but on many occasions, I have tried to analyze why Belize is the way it is. When I ask myself what is the reason that the inhabitants or citizens are so diverse in their thoughts when education here has been through the Christian religion, I start to think, and when I try to go through the past, I realize that the inhabitants of this place, which was known as the Settlement of the Bay of Honduras, were always afraid of their masters, they lived under the order of a master, and with that they grew up and also lived under fear of a God who was going to punish them, when in reality God is love. However, not man. Man is a beast, although among them, there are good people, humans, who see others as human beings. Anyway, I continue with the point of fear.

The other fear they had was that they always believed they were going to be invaded by Guatemala, and they grew up thinking that England, their master, was always going to defend them. Why? Because every time Guatemala raised its voice or tried to enter this place, England sent its ships or its harrier, and the people thought they were defending them; nevertheless, it was not so. What England was defending was the wealth of the land, the natural resources. That’s what they were defending, not the people. That was only, and continues to be, a mistake, because nowadays I hear on the radio — when they have their talk show—people speak about how Guatemala will never be able to invade because they are members of the Commonwealth of Nations, or because England is going to defend them, and now they believe that the Gringos are going to defend them.

In short, they have always been living under fear, and when you live that way, it is easy to be manipulated by politicians. Here, in Belize, there are only two political parties. I don’t know whether to call them official, because as I have understood, they are not registered. However, it is the custom, it is the culture, and it has become law. They call themselves democratic. They fill their mouths calling themselves democratic, but in reality, the only democratic thing about this country is when citizens have the right to elect area representatives of constituencies. And the one who gains the majority of area representatives, forms the government. And the leader of the political party automatically becomes the prime minister. That’s all! There is nothing democratic about that, other than electing an area representative. I also heard that there was going to be a reform of the Constitution, but between that I have listened to an infinite number of laws that are going through this and that and the other arguments, but I understand absolutely nothing, because I am not a lawyer. I’m not a linguist either. Words have a lot to say, but I’m not a linguist.

I believe that there must be democracy, but here in Belize there is no such thing, although they fill their mouths saying the opposite. What exists here are opportunists who take advantage of a people who live under psychological fear. What I would like is that one day, they would come to say that they are going to change the system of government, then it would be different. Area representatives should do exactly that: represent the area or the citizens of their constituency, nothing more. And the prime minister should be elected by the people, instead of being an area representative. Just because he is the leader of his political party, he automatically becomes prime minister; that is not democratic. Everyone must be elected, including the senators, and the one who is elected by the people as prime minister, or call him whatever name you want to give him, who would be the leader of the country, he should be the one who chooses among the pool of professionals who should be the ones to hold the post as ministers, not the area representatives.

The area representatives are to represent the people, the citizens, before those ministers, and see that things run as they should be: perfect, in favor of the Belizean people. So, please, stop circling the issue and come clearly, no or yes, not a maybe nor possibly. Have enough guts to make the necessary changes so that this nation can be democratic. Another point that makes me angry is when they want to take as example the United States because according to them it is a democratic country, which believes in freedom and equality. That is a vile lie. Even those who speak like this are lying to themselves. It is not a democratic country; it is not a country that believes in freedom or equality, since those who live there know that there are 50 million people, North Americans, whether they are black, whether they are Latino, whether they are white, who live in vile poverty, and for drugs to enter that country, it is because there are people inside, the same American cartels, who control it. And the same government knows it, and don’t play the fool. Nothing can enter the United States if the government doesn’t allow it, if the system does not allow it. They have zombies in the streets, they have people living under bridges, on the streets, people who don’t have enough to eat, and that’s right there. The same Americans who have a voice, who have the courage to publicly express what they see, confirm it.

Obviously, that doesn’t come here in Belize; other things come here. They give to the people and feed the people with fallacies, with fictitious words, but the truth is that there is enormous inequality in the United States, and there is no such democracy as they chant so much throughout the world, and they make wars because they want to bring democracy and freedom. It is a great lie, and history is there to prove it. So, educate the Belizean people as it should be and stop copying others.
