BELIZE CITY, Thurs. July 6, 2023

Two men have been charged after they inflicted severe injuries to 34-year-old Coast Guard officer, Daniel Sabido, which caused him to be partially paralyzed. The incident reportedly occurred at the Elton Gillett Park in Burrell Boom Village, Belize District, last Saturday, July 1.

The two men charged are 52-year-old Garrison Nicholson, also known as “Bol”, and 38-year-old Adrian Myvett, both of Burrell Boom.

An eyewitness of the incident, 30-year-old Robert Tillett, told police that he was at a basketball game with friends when Sabido went to the right side of the court and was attacked by Nicholson, who pulled out a machete, and Myvett, who picked up a bottle and threw it at Sabido, hitting him at the back of his head.

Tillett and his acquaintances went to assist Sabido to take him to the hospital for medical attention, and as a result, they also were injured.

When both Nicholson and Myvett appeared in court on Wednesday, July 5, Nicholson, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to the charge of aggravated assault with a machete and was granted bail of $15,000; while Myvett was charged with two counts – one count of attempted murder and one count of possession of a controlled drug due to the discovery of 11.63 grams of cannabis in his possession.

No plea was taken for the attempted murder charge, but he pleaded guilty to the drug charge and was fined $400. Myvett was remanded to the Belize Central Prison.

The two men are expected to return to court on September 5.
