BELIZE CITY, Belize, Wed. Nov. 22, 2023
In a groundbreaking move, the eight teams of the Belize Elite Basketball League (BEBL) – San Pedro Tiger Sharks, Orange Walk Running Rebels, Belize Hurricanes, Belize City Defenders, Belmopan Red Tigaz, Western Ballaz, Dangriga Dream Ballers, and Punta Gorda Panthers – have united to form a single, cohesive sports organization. This unprecedented collaboration marks a new era in Belizean basketball.
The newly formed entity will be governed by a boardroom comprising the owners of all eight teams, with the league’s commissioner serving as the Board Chairman. This structure ensures balanced and representative leadership, reflecting each team’s diverse strengths and perspectives.
To manage and foster growth in key areas, the organization will operate through specialized subcommittees focusing on Competition, Media, Marketing, and Player Relations. These subcommittees will drive innovation and development within their respective domains, ensuring comprehensive growth and progress across the league.
Additionally, the organization will introduce league-wide sponsorship opportunities, opening new avenues for business partnerships and community engagement. This approach aims to elevate the league’s profile and create sustainable financial growth.
Furthermore, a pioneering revenue-sharing agreement will be implemented, ensuring equitable distribution of revenues among the teams. This agreement recognizes the varying market sizes of the teams, categorizing them into small (Punta Gorda and Belmopan), medium (San Pedro, Orange Walk, Cayo, Dangriga), and large (Belize District) market segments. The Belize Hurricanes and Belize City Defenders, representing the large market segment of Belize District and Belize Rural, and the Punta Gorda Panthers and Belmopan Red Tigaz, representing the small market segment of Punta Gorda and Belmopan, exemplify the diverse market dynamics within the league.
This historic unification promises to strengthen the league’s competitiveness, enhance fan experience, and promote basketball across Belize. The BEBL is poised for a transformative journey, promising exciting times ahead for players, fans, and stakeholders.
