The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has released the names of students who topped the May/June 2023 sitting of the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC), Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (CCSLC) examinations as well as the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE). 

According to the Caribbean Examinations Council, this year’s top schools were both from Guyana with the Anna Regina Secondary School receiving the award for the CSEC School of the Year 2023, and for the second time in a year the overall winner of the Caribbean Examinations Council regional award for the Most Outstanding Performance Overall in Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations. Queen’s College in Guyana also received the CAPE School of the Year 2023 award while other top performers hail from schools in Port of Spain Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica.  

At a CXC award Ceremony held in Guyana on December 7th, the Prize for CAPE Most Outstanding Overall Candidate went to Naresh Jagnanan of Queen’s College Guyana. He achieved Grade I in Caribbean Studies, Communication Studies, Integrated Mathematics, Law Unit 2, Sociology Unit 1, Economics Unit 1, and Units 1 and 2 of Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Management of Business and Tourism. He also achieved Grade II in Economics Unit 2. 

Naresh’s performance in Accounting, Economics, Entrepreneurship, and Management of Business has once again earned him the top Business award, this time for CAPE.

The second spot went to Trinidad and Tobago’s Isabelle d’Abadie of St Joseph’s Convent – Port of Spain, who earned the award for Most Outstanding Candidate in Humanities. She achieved Grade I in all of her subjects: Caribbean Studies and Communication Studies and in Units 1 and 2 of Geography, History, and Sociology. 

Darius Payne of Naparima College, in Trinidad and Tobago received the award for Most Outstanding Candidate in Natural Sciences. He achieved Grade I in Caribbean Studies and Communication Studies, Applied Mathematics Unit 1 and Units 1 and 2 of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Pure Mathematics. He also attained Grade II in Applied Mathematics Unit 2. 

Sashaunna Lamb of Decrarteret College, Jamaica, and Ryker Harricharan of Hillview College, Trinidad and Tobago also won respective awards for their stellar performances.

The prize for the Most Outstanding Candidate Overall in CSEC examinations, completing 27 subjects in this past sitting was given to Alex Muntaz. He achieved Grade I in 24 subjects inclusive of Agricultural Science (Double Award); Biology; Caribbean History; Chemistry; Electronic Document Preparation and Management; English A; Family and Resource Management; Food, Nutrition, and Health; Human and Social Biology; Industrial Technology – Building; Industrial Technology – Electrical; Industrial Technology – Mechanical; Information Technology; Integrated Science; Mathematics; Office Administration; Physical Education and Sport; Physics; Principles of Accounts; Principles of Business; Religious Education; Social Studies; Spanish and Technical Drawing. 

Alex also earned Grade II in Economics, English B, and Geography while his performance in Information Technology, Food, Nutrition and Health, Family and Resource, Management, Technical Drawing, Industrial Technology – Building, Industrial Technology – Electrical and Industrial Technology – Mechanical also earned him the award for Most Outstanding Performance in the Technical/Vocational category of subjects.

Naila Rahaman, who hails from Queen’s College, in. Guyana also won the award for Most Outstanding Performance in Humanities. She achieved Grade I in 17 subjects. Those range from Caribbean History, English B, Geography, Religious Education, Social Studies, Spanish,

Agricultural Science Double Award (DA), Economics, English A, Information Technology, Integrated Science, Mathematics, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, Electronic Document Preparation and Management, Human and Social Biology, and Food, 

Nutrition and Health. She also achieved Grade II in Theatre Arts and French and Grade III in Visual Arts.

Another Queen’s College student, Abigail Stephanas, earned the award of Most Outstanding Performance in Science with Grade I in all 17 of her subjects: Agricultural Science-Double Award (DA); Biology; Chemistry; Integrated Science; Physics; Human and Social Biology;

Additional Mathematics; Economics; English A; English B; Information Technology; Mathematics; Principles of Accounts; Principles of Business; Social Studies; Spanish; and Electronic Document Preparation and Management.

Rounding out the awardees from Guyana was Siddiq Gafar of the I.S.A. Islamic School. Siddiq was presented with the award for Most Outstanding Performance in Business. He achieved Grade I in 14 subject areas.

Students from Trinidad and Tobago, which include Deanna Beepath of Rio Claro West Secondary School received the award for Most Outstanding Performance in Visual Arts 2D, while Celando Matchevelli of Manchester High School in Jamaica won the award for Most Outstanding Performance in Visual Arts 3D. Fellow Jamaican, Meira Wohl of Campion College, received the award for Most Outstanding Short Story.

Kayla Wright of Campion College, Jamaica earned the award for Most Outstanding Performance in CSEC Principles of Accounts, While Matthew Dunn of York Castle High School, also in Jamaica, won the University of Guyana’s Menezes-Rodney Award for Most Outstanding Performance in History. Rishi Pokhriyal of Methodist Agogic Centre (MAC) Comprehensive Secondary Education, St. Maarten received the award for Most Outstanding Performance by a Male Student in the Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (CCSLC) examinations. Siena Wojack of the Omololu International School, Anguilla won the award for the Most Outstanding Female Student.

Unfortunately, no Belizean students were able to place top spots in any of the selections this year.
