BELIZE CITY, Thurs. June 6, 2024

A new mobile app has been created by the National Sports Council of Belize that will allow Belizeans to donate any amount of money using their debit or credit cards, or even bank transfers, if they want to support our athletes.

The app is called, “Support Sports Bz,” and it will be used to financially support local athletes traveling to represent the nation in international tournaments or to sponsor local tournaments.

“The app is going to be the engine that supports the dreams of the Belizean athletes, our future Hall of Famers, and the people that take our national pride in international contests worldwide. This provides the opportunity for every Belizean from every walk of life, regardless of their financial standing, to donate to a worthy cause. It is often said that half of Belize lives in other countries,” said Iris Centeno, Sports Director at the National Sports Council.

“Over the years, sports should be a contribution from government, the business community, and likewise from the people. So, it allows us to raise [money from] other than government. The government will give its contribution, but because sports can be an industry, it is humongous, it needs a huge amount of money,” said Minster of Sports, Hon. Rodwell Ferguson.

“We are going to make sure we are accountable to the Belizean people. Every month we are going to say we received so much this month and spent so much. We need to build back the confidence of the people,” he added.

Donations go as low as a dollar BZ and the app is available for Apple and Android devices.
