Dear Editor,
I am writing in response to the recent leaked Belmopan City Council document listing individuals granted lands in the Innovabel Estate at prices significantly below market value. While my name shows by far the highest payment among all on the list, media reports suggest that I might be involved in that scandal. I wish to disassociate myself from any implication of wrongdoing and clarify the genuine process I made to purchase my first plot of land.
After several months of seeking an opportunity for land ownership in Belmopan, I was offered, as a first-time land owner, a plot in the Innovabel area at a discounted price of $15,000 instead of $20,000. I did not negotiate a discount, nor did I perceive the offer as an illicit deal. The offer required an immediate down-payment of $1,500 (10% of the total) and monthly instalments of $500 until the full amount was paid.
Unfortunately, some reports about the leaked document misleadingly imply that my down-payment ($1500) constitutes the full payment, which is incorrect. I remain committed to fulfilling my entire payment obligations.
A few weeks ago, when the new city administrator informed me that the land was undervalued and needed a renegotiation to reflect its true value, I complied fully, signed a new agreement and readjusted the payment schedule as I strive to act with integrity.
I want to make it unequivocally clear, therefore, that I did not participate, receive title nor have any desire to participate, in any “land grab,” hustle, or illegitimate transaction. As a Belizean youth, I just want to legitimately own my first plot of land in our jewel. My actions have always adhered to the formal process presented to me and I have maintained transparency and accountability throughout.
Thank you for allowing me to clarify my position.
Sincerely,
Kahlil H. Enriquez
