What does it mean when you say one should have purpose in life? Is it something innate in each of us, or is it something acquired, or accepted, on our journey through life? There are those who, at an early age, see and know what they want to do with their lives. That clarity, that vision of them achieving their dreams, and then actually achieving those goals, to me are signs of greatness, and having that sense of purpose. Some of those dreams may be misguided, but purposeful nevertheless. Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Jesus, Martin Luther, Da Vinci, Joseph Priestly, Chopin, Lincoln, Ghandi, Mandela, MLK! In Belize, Isaiah Morter, Turton, Goldson and Price (those 2 are inextricably linked), Rhaburn, Bob Reneau, Evan X Hyde, Andy Palacio, San Cas, Jesus Ken! Visionaries who had their purpose realized, and some, unfulfilled!
As you grow older, you will find yourself wondering about your place in the larger scheme of things. What have you contributed to the society you live in, and to life in general? You will wonder if you have made a difference, good or bad, and if you are leaving a legacy. I believe that most of us question our value and purpose on this earth. Those who don’t are the lucky or unlucky ones; in my opinion, they don’t believe they owe anything to anyone!
I have friends who are givers; they take care of their neighbors and friends and family, selflessly and without the slightest thought. I admire them for their dedication to humanity, and wish that I could be that selfless; but I do not have their sense of purpose, or humility. There are those who have goals that they pursue through life, striving relentlessly to fulfill their purpose, their dreams. But for most of us, I believe, we just accept what is right in front of us. Going through life accepting our fates, not curious in the least about all the possibilities that are right in front of us, but that we cannot see, or understand!
The question invariably comes up about what one would do if they could relive their lives. I believe that purpose should be the first answer I would give, followed by all my unfulfilled dreams and aspirations, that are lurking in the background of my mind!
What is your purpose in life?
“To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour…. “ – Auguries of Innocence” by William Blake
