A football game for the ages – the Mighty Avengers and Chito’s Rangers

LettersA football game for the ages – the Mighty Avengers and Chito’s Rangers

Dear Editor,
I can clearly remember the goal that Barry Gerardo “High Priest” Contreras (RIP) scored in that “Champion of Champions” game between Cayo’s Avengers and Chito’s Rangers at the MCC back in 1977-78, as mentioned in the Amandala sports editor’s note on the Moss flashback article.

Chito’s were attacking the northern half of the field and Contreras was on the right side handling the pill. If I am not mistaken, Avenger’s defender, Mena, was on him; Contreras tunneled him, and from a good distance, out of the 18, he let loose a shot, not a cannon, just a beauty loaded with sides that when the keeper stopped it, it rolled out of his hands and into the goal.

One of the prettiest goals I ever saw scored. “Tillyman” once scored a goal on Verdes in Orange Walk like that, but his was more from the center field.

Also, if I am not mistaken, Wellington Ramos, Chito’s defender, pulled out a ball that was nearly passing the goal line, thus saving the victory.

I also remember speaking with Jim Waight of Avengers after the game, and he, ever the gentleman, stated, “Some you win and some you lose”. I knew him because he had also played ball in Orange Walk’s local tournaments.

That was a game for the ages. Sad thing we couldn’t video those games.

If I remember wrong, please correct me.

Regards,
Romel Cuello
