Amendments to Sporting Regulations

HighlightsAmendments to Sporting Regulations

BELMOPAN, Fri. May 7, 2021– A new Statutory Instrument (SI) that removes some of the COVID-19-related restrictions on sporting activity was recently gazetted. Under the new instrument, sports facilitators may now host sporting events for non-contact sports, provided that no spectators are physically present when these activities take place. In addition, training for contact sports will be allowed.

The SI further exempts persons engaged in non-contact sports or who are training for contact sports, from having to practice social distancing or wear a mask while doing so.

While athletes and sports lovers have been waiting patiently for the resumption of sports activities, preventative measures must still be in place to minimize the transmission of the coronavirus. The provisions in the recent Statutory Instrument will allow for the progressive reintroduction of sporting activities.

The playing of close-contact sports like basketball, boxing and football for recreational purposes is still prohibited.
