On Saturday night, Belizean boxers from the Leopold Smart Gym took on a line-up of Guatemalan boxers at the Princess Hotel and Casino. This was the 3rd international boxing event in Belize for 2011. Well known media personality James Adderly was the event’s promoter.
Belize was represented by Alex Neal, Harrison Smith, Rayford Smith, Harold Mariano, Max Williams, and Sherman Galvez.
Belize took on a team of experienced boxers, reportedly including a young Central American champion, who won his bout against Harold Mariano. At the end of the night, Guatemala took home 3 wins to Belize’s 2.
Alex Neal won the first match for Belize. In the other 3 consecutive matches, the Smith brothers and Mariano lost to their Guatemalan opponents. The officials declared the 5th match, with Williams representing Belize, as a technical draw. The call was made when the referee and other officials judged that Williams’ Guatemalan opponent had delivered him a low blow. Sherman Galvez was able to win the final match, bringing the score to 3:2, with the overall victory going to the Guatemalans.
Amandala understands that Adderly, as promoter, is in the process of scheduling a 4th match against Mexico. That event is set tentatively for next month in San Pedro.
