BEWU will not strike…yet

BELIZE CITY, Tues. May 4, 2021– A draft of a release that was to be issued from the Belize Energy Workers Union (BEWU) was leaked last week. That draft informed the public that the union is monitoring the interaction between the Joint Unions and the Government of Belize and would strike only as a last option.

The Assistant Secretary-General of the Belize Energy Workers Union, Marvin Mora, told the media that the draft press release was presented to the energy workers who are members of the union in an effort to determine whether there was a consensus for support of the Joint Unions. He added, however, that the BEWU workers would only strike as an absolute last option, and that decision would come from the general membership.

The union, in the leaked release, advised the government and the Joint Unions to seek out mediation as an option to resolve the dispute. In the release, the union also stated that they cannot agree to the 10% salary cut in a “cash-starved” economy and that they sympathize with workers facing the 10% cuts.

For now, there is no indication whether the union will lend a hand of support to the Joint Unions’ plight.
