Here in Belize City at the MCC Grounds, the Group A leaders, Dangriga?s Wagiya, gave FC Belize their first loss of the season at home. Even though the game meant nothing as it relates to the final standings, both FC Belize and Wagiya wanted to have a strong showing to go into the playoffs on a high note. FC Belize came in with plans to stretch out the field and play an attacking game off their opponent?s defensive errors. Wagiya were not willing to cooperate. Wagiya took the opportunity given to them through the poor marking of the FC Belize defenders and at the 19thminute they were able to draw first blood. In a scramble for the ball inside the FC Belize area, Malakai Nolberto received a deflected pass off a defender and sent a rather feeble shot that beat Elroy ?Zabel? Rowley to settle in the back of the net for the first goal. The City franchise got the message and started attacking through the middle with Ian ?Coco? Henry playing the intimidator. But Wagiya wasn?t impressed with the intimidation. On several occasions they were able to spring Edwin Fernandez free on counter attacks to neutralize the FC Belize pressure. Wagiya controlled most of the first half with FC Belize ending the first half down 1-nil. In the second half, the home team came out applying pressure for the equalizer. FC Belize maintained good ball control and possession for the first ten to fifteen minutes but were unable to score. Wagiya took control from the 15thminute on. Guatemalan sweeper Thomas Gamboa and his Wagiya defensive crew made it look relatively easy, cutting off the angles and stealing almost every offensive opportunity that FC Belize created. Twenty-six minutes into the second half, Harrison ?Rape? Tasher drove down the middle pulling the defenders along. Tasher found Edwin Fernandez trailing up the right side, and Fernandez hit a low grass burner under the outstretched body of ?Zabel? Rowley for the 2-nil lead. At the 35thminute mark, frustration had set in on FC Belize to the point that Ian ?Coco? Henry had to take an early shower. Henry was shown an instant red card for a flagrant foul against Tasher. In the late stages of the game at the 86thminute mark, Malakai Nolberto used the one-man down advantage. ?Mala? received a pass splitting two defenders to get his second goal for Wagiya?s 3-nil shutout win.
