Caesar Ridge ends Top League with back-to-back victories; PLB next?

GeneralCaesar Ridge ends Top League with back-to-back victories; PLB next?

BELIZE CITY, Thurs. May 5, 2022

Reports were late coming out of the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) secretariat on the final Week 10 of its Top League 2021-2022 Closing Season, which ended on the weekend of April 23-24. Most notably in that last week of games was the second consecutive victory by Belize City’s Caesar Ridge FC over long standing PLB entrant Wagiya United SC at the MCC Grounds.

In other Week 10 games, already crowned champion Verdes FC maintained their undefeated status with a 0-0 draw against Altitude FC at the M.A. Stadium in Independence on Saturday night, April 23. And also on Saturday, out at the Ambergris Stadium, the San Pedro Pirates demolished Garden City FC, 6-0, with goals from Horace Avila (9’ & 48’), Moises Hernandez (31’ & 55’), Kyle Budna (52’) and Jesse Smith (77’).

The other game was on Sunday afternoon at the MCC Grounds in Belize City, and diehard city fans finally got a treat, as it was an exciting see-saw contest that saw the home team, Caesar Ridge FC emerging victorious in injury time by a 4-3 score, to record their second victory of the tournament and move up the standings, pushing their opponents Wagiya United SC into last place. (See standings below.) Shaking the net for Caesar Ridge were Orlando “Bredda” Velasquez (18’), Mathias Barriga (20’), Naim “Neemo” Wilson (57’) and Denmark Gill (90+3’); while Wagiya SC goals were by Izon Gill (14’), Steven Verdugo (31’) and Timothy Estero (82’).

With the return of the Premier League of Belize (PLB) tournament expected to take place sometime in July or August, speculation is strong that the positive showing of Caesar Ridge FC in the closing weeks of the FFB Top League may aid in their lobby for a spot in the PLB tournament. Whatever, fans are eagerly anticipating the much more intense competition they have gotten used to in PLB tournaments which routinely feature a four-team playoff at the end of regular competition.
