SportsCatching up with high school football at the MCC, playoffs start today

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Feb. 1, 2016–The playoffs are here already in the Central Secondary Schools Sports Association (CSSSA) high school female (F) and male (M) football tournament which kicked off on January 7 at the MCC Grounds. Since there are still no lights at the MCC, kickoff time is 3:00 p.m. for the first of two playoff games, 1 female and 1 male, which are scheduled for today. But first, we have some catching up to do, because our last report concerned games played way back on Wednesday, January 20.

And (M) Ladyville Tech dropped Gwen Liz, 4-1, with 2 goals by Eric Gomez and 1 each by David Solorzano and Diedron Baptist; while Naim Wilson got the only goal for Gwen Liz.

Wednesday, January 27: (M) Wesley won, 2-1, over ACC. Devon Davis and Kenyon Lewis shook the net for Wesley, while Christian Ancona scored for ACC. (Herman Card of ACC got a red card.)

(There was no game on Thursday.)

The playoff schedule has #1 vs #4 in both females and males today, and #2 vs #3 tomorrow. Wednesday is a rest day, and the same teams meet in game 2 of their 2-game semifinal series on Thursday and Friday. The winners clash in a 2-game finals series the following week, February 8 and 10.

This week’s semifinals schedule:
Mon. Feb. 1 – (F) SCA vs WES; (M) WES vs LTH

Tue. Feb. 2 – (F) GLH vs LTH; (M) ACC vs SJC

Thurs. Feb. 4 – (F) SCA vs WES; (M) WES vs LTH

Reliable but unofficial reports reaching our sports desk tonight are that SCA girls defeated Wesley, 3-0; and Wesley boys clipped Ladyville Tech, 3-1, at the MCC this evening in their semifinals game 1.
