COROZAL ENLISTS THE SERVICES OF A MEXICAN COACH, CARLOS ARMINSADE

SportsCOROZAL ENLISTS THE SERVICES OF A MEXICAN COACH, CARLOS ARMINSADE

The Corozal team is probably one of the smallest teams in the league and for them to enjoy any measure of success in this year?s tournament, they will need to be clicking on all cylinders every game. They have no margin for error.

Their starting lineup will probably have the tandem of Juvencio Serano and Andre Almendarez in the backcourt, with Roger Favela at the small forward position while Evan Salazar and Jarrett Tillett will share time at the power forward and center positions.

Serano, who just last year won MVP awards in the interoffice basketball tournament, brings enormous speed to the Corozal backcourt, along with the ability to beat opponents off the dribble. He has good ball handling skills and can hit from behind the trey line consistently.

Shane Sebastian, who is no stranger to semi-pro basketball and who has played most of his career with Corozal, will back up Serano, while David Lawrence will more than likely fill the role of a third string guard.

At the two position, Corozal should hold its own with their #1 pick, Andre Almendarez, playing that position. Andre is multi-talented and can play about three different positions adequately. He is quick and has an exceptional feel for the game. On most nights he can wreak havoc with his slashing ability. Carl Cattouse and Aaron Bell, two fairly unknown players, will offer relief.

Long time veteran and sleek shooter Roger Favela will more than likely play the small forward position. His established ability to hit from deep will make opponents play honest and will certainly aid Corozal?s inside game. Jason Daly should bring much needed relief to Roger, given that on most nights opponents will try to exploit his slow-footedness and suspect defense.

At the power positions, Evan Salazar and Jarrett Tillett will attempt to man one of the more difficult positions in semi-pro basketball. That is the pivot position, where they will be called upon to defend opponents the likes of Kirk Smith, Claude Jones, AC Augustine, Keith Acosta, Ernest Broaster, and Leon Williams. In the event they should falter, Alfred Bainton and Shamir Martinez will be backups.

The collective performance at the post position will be a key to Corozal?s success. If they are not able to defend the post and get their share of rebounds, they may be in for some long nights.

According to team manager, Jerome Palma, they are quite comfortable as a unit entering 2006 and believe that given the fact that the league is basically a six-foot league, their lack of size will not place them at a disadvantage. They are confident that the transition style of ball that coach Arminsade has implemented will work wonders for his franchise and they are counting on taking full advantage of their home floor.

Ever since Corozal?s entry into the league, opponents have found the Corozal arena to be one of the loudest and probably the toughest place to win in. It may be the enthusiasm of the Corozal fans, or maybe Corozal just plays with more confidence at home. Whatever the case, the addition of an international coach, along with the mystique of the Corozal Auditorium, is their edge.
