BELIZE CITY, Thurs. May 13, 2021– As the Covid-19 pandemic continues across the globe, the country continues its inoculation program. To date, over 50,000 persons have received at least one shot of the Oxford/Astra-Zeneca vaccine.

Fortunately, the second batch of COVID-19 vaccines has arrived in the country from the COVAX facility. The additional thirty-three thousand six hundred doses arrived just when the first batch was about to be exhausted.

Since the start of the pandemic in Belize, a total of 12,709 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been identified. At this time 44 cases remain active in the country. A total of 12,331 recoveries have been recorded and there have been 323 fatalities.

On May 13, 2021, the Ministry of Health and Wellness infographic indicated a total of 2 new cases from a batch of 537 tests processed. Eleven recoveries were recorded and no new deaths were identified. They also recorded 1 hospitalizations, with no persons needing intensive care.

On Wednesday, May 12, a total of 3 new cases were found from a batch of 598 tests processed. The Ministry recorded 2 active hospitalizations and 13 recoveries on that day. No additional deaths were identified and no persons were in need of intensive care.

As of May 12, 50,292 persons within the country have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

On May 11, the Ministry of Health and Wellness reported that 1,683 vaccines were administered on that day, and a total of 4 new cases were identified from a batch of 548 tests processed. Two active hospitalizations were recorded, but neither of the two persons needed intensive care. No additional COVID-19-related death was identified on that day.

Over the weekend, from May 8th to the 10th, a total of 14 new cases of COVID-19 were identified from a batch of 1215 cases. A total of 15 cases were classified as recoveries, and no new deaths due to the virus were recorded.

Prior to that weekend, on Friday, May 7, four new cases were found from a batch of 562 tests processed. No new deaths were recorded and no persons needed intensive care.

India has recorded its second day on which more than 4000 persons died from Covid-19. That country is now seeking more vaccines after making donation to many countries, including Belize, at the start of this year.

The double-variant identified in that country is driving new infections and is currently spreading worldwide. Today, Cabinet announced that the country would ban travel to, and arrivals from, India and Bangladesh temporarily.

Globally, since the start of the pandemic, a total of 160,074,267 confirmed cases have been identified and 3,325,260 deaths have been reported to WHO. As of May 12, a total of 1,264,164,553 vaccine doses have been administered worldwide.
