BELIZE CITY, Thurs. May 13, 2021– We received the shocking news this morning that our football brother and friend, Charles Hogan had passed last night in Los Angeles., a victim of the dreaded Covid-19.
According to reports, “Hogan,” as he is popularly known in Belize and the US, had been battling the virus for the past two weeks.
Though he never achieved Hall of Fame status as a football player in Belize before migrating to the U.S. in the early 1970s, it was as a dedicated promoter of the sport and manager of the L.A. Warriors team for decades that Hogan made his greatest impact and contribution to the sport and culture of football among Belizeans in the U.S., often taking his L.A. team on the road for friendly encounters with other Belizean teams in New York and other American cities.
On his visit to Belize back in 2017, Hogan was a guest on the Press Cadogan Sports Show, and he was also featured in Amandala with an exciting recollection of his youthful football experiences in Dangriga, where he grew up in the 1960s, before migrating to the States as a young man.
A natural leader, and a real sportsman with a big heart, Charles Hogan touched the lives of many Belizeans, and the Jewel has lost a great son. From the sports desk and from all of Kremandala, our deepest condolences to all his relatives and friends here in Belize as well as in L.A. where he resided, and elsewhere in the diaspora. Jah lives! Thanks for the precious memories, and Rest in Peace, brother Charles Hogan!
