BELIZE CITY, Mon. July 24, 2023

This week, the Belize community was hit with yet another tragedy as a decomposed body was discovered near Sandhill Road, in the Maxboro area. Just after 12:30 p.m. on Friday, July 21, the police received reports of the disturbing crime scene.

Upon arrival, officers found a gold BMW parked off the road, with the key in the ignition but the machine not running. Inside they discovered the lifeless body of a male, already in a state of advanced decomposition which rendered him unrecognizable.

The family of 23-year-old Phozhaun Lewis, otherwise known as “Buss it”, firmly believes that the deceased is their missing loved one. They claim that Lewis had been missing for two days, and they had warned him to be cautious of his movements due to his affiliations with the PIV gang in Belize City.

Despite these concerns, no official missing person report had been filed with the police, adding another layer of complexity to the case.

Lewis, who is no stranger to police, was allegedly shot multiple times to his body.

Lewis’s family believes that someone he knew might have lured him to his death. However, the police were cautious, acknowledging the difficulty in proving such claims without concrete evidence.

The authorities are waiting for the results of a postmortem examination with the hope that it will shed light on the circumstances surrounding the death. Unfortunately, the decomposed state of the body presented a significant challenge in identifying potential signs of injury or foul play.

We contacted ACP Hilberto Romero on Monday, July 24, but due to the pending results of the postmortem he was unable to provide an update on the case.
