Double crunch

SportsDouble crunch

The defending champs, Sagitun, and sub champs, Juventus, clashed last weekend, with Juventus taking the first of the best of 3-games series. The league rivals are now scheduled to take over the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence for Double Crunch Time. This has nothing to do with the crunchy taste of Nestle Crunch. It will be a bruising 90 minutes of football or more, if they should go into penalty shootouts.

There are two things that could happen after the game Saturday night: Sagitun could end the season without a trophy, or both Sagitun and Juventus could end up in a critical Game Three that would be a road game for both, since it would be played at the storied MCC Grounds in Belize City, Sunday, July 3rd.

Neither team has been able to defeat the other on the road, which makes it more difficult for Juventus to win at the Michael Ashcroft where many have fallen victim to the Sagi at-home mystique. Both clubs are formidable opponents and to try and look into the proverbial crystal ball would be an injustice. Sagitun has seen a few championships and lifted a few trophies, but so has Juventus, with four national and three knockout championships

They both play beautiful football and are so evenly matched that last weekend?s game almost took the entire 90 minutes before deciding a winner. Juventus? Deris ?Colombia? Benavides is a spectacular midfielder with Chris Hendricks down the left flank or up the middle; Hendricks? brother, Oliver ?Lionheart? Hendricks moving through centerfield; Donnie Tun, Kevin Pelayo and Raul Celiz all under control and picking the right moment to lock and load on firepower. The Juventus? gunners, at their best, provide movement, excitement and a Belizean style of football few clubs can match. But they haven?t been able to raise the championship trophy in two tries. I sense a lack of killer instinct.

Sagitun is just as beautiful to watch, with Robert ?Hog? Muschamp unloading missiles from anywhere near the half field line; Orlando ?Leach? Jimenez with the fancy footwork that keeps opponents wary of coming in too hard; Elroy ?Bibb? Kuylen getting it on the run and with, quite possibly the most multi-dimensional player in the league – Hilly Muschamp going from sweeper to midfield is astonishing. The only problem is that they sometimes fall into a false sense of security that other teams will simply lie down and say, take it.
