GeneralDrunk driver’s car hits couple on motorbike

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Dec. 13, 2021– A woman identified as Maria Leiva was arrested and charged last Thursday night after being involved in a traffic collision which severely injured a young couple, who are now hospitalized. The couple, Jason Kelly and Amy Juarez, were on their motorcycle en route to Chan Pine Ridge when Leiva’s vehicle reportedly collided with the motorbike head-on. Both were flung from the motorbike, and were subsequently taken to the hospital by passersby.

Leiva has been charged for driving a motor vehicle with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit and for driving without due care and attention.

At this time, both victims are in the hospital, having undergone surgeries for various bone fractures. In a plea released by Juarez on social media last week, she asked simply for prayers. She said that the accident has devastated the families, and has taken an added emotional toll on her, since Kelly’s condition is much worse than hers.

The family is asking the public for help to cover medical bills for Kelly.
