EOB: Tyranny or Freedom

FeaturesEOB: Tyranny or Freedom

Out of the seventy-three pages of verbiage that has been titled the Equal Opportunity Bill, there are one or two sections that should get to the heart of the matter to tell you what or who will cure the social ill(s) that need to be corrected or disciplined. This, I think, every student of jurisprudence, the science or art, and philosophy of lawmaking, will tell you. To my surprise, none of our practitioners of the legal profession have zeroed in on the section, or sections of EOB, to analyse and measure the proposed remedy or solution.

Are the ills hate expressions against homosexuals?

Many actions done by people in a society cannot be described as good or virtuous. Some should be described as thoughtless, vulgar, common, or just plain silly. These certainly would not become the matter of any law to be enforced and imposed on the whole nation except, as the desire to create an elitist class in society.

Since we are a people blessed with the innocence of being a fairly classless society where the individual moves hither and thither, up and down the ladder created by money and possessions, the temptations of elitism seem to be repugnant.

When you talk about discrimination, we ask if you are talking about race or creed. If you talk about race, we become nervous, because our veins are streaked with so many variations of red, we hesitate for fear of denying any part of us. Not all of us have had the courage of Evan X, who chose his favourite stream and proclaimed it to the world!

Hate crimes against sex… In Belize historically, this behaviour that is homosexuality has been more a matter of joke than hate. Is a joke discriminatory? Maybe, but most of the time a joke releases tension rather than encourages violence. As a matter of record, in some cases of murder involving homosexuals, the guilty and the victim seemed to have been intimate friends who acted out of jealousy. The murders were “love” crimes, not hate ones.

The professors of jurisprudence should caution legislators and politicians that the promotion of virtue and the eradication of minor aberrations in human conduct are best left to the person or to organizations, that promote goodness and morality in spite of the fact that the state that respects order knows that most of the expressions of order, which is civility, must proceed from individuals who conform their will to that of the many for the sake of the COMMON GOOD.

Any society that presumes to assume to itself the power to regulate the workings of the human being’s mind, heart and soul will quickly descend into tyranny. And tyranny is most repugnant to Almighty God and to us.

God almighty could force every single one of us to obey his every wish. And we would become robots. Some people might want this, but most of us DO NOT. We want to be free! And guess what – GOD WANTS us to be free. This is why his permissive will allows us to choose bad or evil, for he wants us to truly be free to choose Him out of pure love.

Does the Belize government want to do to us what even GOD rejects?

If the answer is “NO”, then we, both the Red and the Blue, have to thrust this pile of paper before us that seeks to choke us into submission… we need to throw it into the garbage drum. Less than one month after the Appeals Court de-criminalised homosexual behaviour, claiming homosexual expression to be wholesome and moral, EOB is kicking us into GAYDOM. This proposed law seems to seek to drown us under much mumbo-jumbo to intimidate or confuse (or both) sincere citizens who wish to live in a better country with freedom to respect and honour all manner of persons!

We in Belize believe that we can both say openly to the homosexual, “I reject your proclivity, but I cherish you as a person with an immortal soul.”

Let us return to the issue raised in my opening paragraph. What is the section (s) of the Equal Opportunity Bill that tells Belize who will choose the Commission and the Tribunal?

I cannot believe that the Attorney General would stoop to the lowest level of naivete to propose a person who has no executive power by the definition of his very office.

The Governor General serves at the pleasure of Her Majesty, which really means the PLEASURE OF THE PRIME MINISTER.

We should call for a complete rejection of the whole proposed law until this offensive provision is deleted, or corrected, or amended.

Take your time, Government; let us take time to consider all the cultural, civilizational, economic, social, educational and all other aspects of this “second constitution.” This will take some time. I believe I can risk assuring you that gays and lesbians will be quite safe during this time, except maybe from their fellows who sometimes explode into murderous rage through jealousy.

Please truly serve the COMMON GOOD for a change!
