Ernest Hinds, 23, sent to prison

GeneralErnest Hinds, 23, sent to prison
Escaped prisoner Ernest Hinds, 23, who was on the run for almost two months, was captured yesterday by the police in a predawn raid in the Havana area of Dangriga.

Hinds pleaded guilty to escape when he appeared today before the Chief Magistrate, Margaret Gabb McKenzie. He asked the Chief Magistrate to be lenient with him, because he had intended to hand himself in but was waiting for an uncle to send money for him from the United States.

But Chief Magistrate McKenzie told him that she could not do so, and sentenced him to three months. She also remanded him into custody for a charge of attempted murder, for which the bail had been withdrawn.

Hinds will also have to serve a term of 7 years and 6 months that was imposed on him in his absence in the #1 Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, November 28, 2006. The sentence was for convictions for attempted robbery, 3 counts of aggravated assault, use of deadly means of harm and damage to property.

The charges arose from an incident that occurred between 8:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on March 22, 2006, at Henry’s Bar, located at #5 Central American Boulevard.

Another defendant, Joseph Almendarez, 23, who was charged jointly with Hinds, was also found guilty and was given the same sentence as Hinds. Almendarez was present in court for the decision and sentence.

Hinds, Dennis Quilter and Casey Allen (deceased), escaped on November 23, 2006, while they were being taken to prison from the Magistrate’s Court in Belize City. The back door of the Prosecution Branch van was kicked open when the van slowed down at a speed bump on Vernon Street, near Cox Tire Shop, and all three men jumped out and ran.
Quilter was captured shortly afterwards, while Allen surrendered himself about three days later.
