DANGRIGA TOWN, Stann Creek District, Wed. July 27, 2022

Adolpho Nunez, also known as “San”, a 43-year-old father of three and a resident of Rear Pine Street in the Riverside area of Dangriga Town, was gunned down in his yard on Monday, July 25, after being called out of his family’s home while he was getting ready for bed at around 9:00 p.m.

Reports have indicated that Nunez was inside his home with his common-law wife getting ready for bed when he heard someone outside his home calling out his name and went to see who it was. Moments after he went outside, he was struck 4 times by bullets fired by an unknown assailant, and his common-law wife found him lying on the ground in a pool of blood gasping for air.

Nunez died while receiving treatment at the Southern Regional Hospital.

It has been reported that the person who called Nunez outside might not have been the gunman, but was cautioned by the shooter not to alert Nunez of his (the shooter’s) presence. It is not yet known whether that person was an intentional accomplice of the gunman, or had coincidentally gone to visit Nunez at the time of the attack.

A cousin of Nunez who wishes to not be identified told 7News that she was at her home at the time of the shooting and was informed by a neighbor of hers who had been riding on a bicycle in the area that her cousin had been shot.

“She explained to me that my cousin was actually on the ground, shot, and it did seem as if it seemed as if he was dead. So, the first thing I did was to call the police, and I called the ambulance to see if they could come to assist us. When we arrived, his body was on the ground, and he was already motionless… There’s not a feeling that I can use to explain it, because, at this point, I think it was just a feeling of confusion. And we tried. We did our best. We put him into the police vehicle and went to see what the outcome would have been. And on our arrival, we were told that he passed while they were assisting him,” she said.

Acknowledging her cousin’s troubled past, she further said, “San was a very friendly individual. I know he has had run- ins with the law, and I will not say he’s a perfect individual. He has done his share here. I don’t know to who or for what reason, but also one of my disappointments is that I do not understand how people would be so callous to just come, you know, right in his home, right in his yard actually, you know and then to just fire weapons like that.”

Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, told local reporters that investigators are close to solving this latest murder along with the stabbing incident that claimed the life of 38-year-old Ronald “Pungaz” Gill over the weekend.

“Based on what investigators are getting, these persons were neighbors. They were friends, and we don’ t know what happened between them that led to the shooting death of the young man, but investigators are on the grounds. They are putting the pieces together, and hopefully, pretty soon we should be able to make an arrest. In both instances in Dangriga, we believe we know who the persons are, and it’s just a matter of the police [putting] the pieces together and [getting] those persons to custody, and we should be able to make an arrest,” he said.

There have been speculations that Nunez’s killing could possibly have been drug-related.
