Female footballers doing it again this Sunday at the MCC

SportsFemale footballers doing it again this Sunday at the MCC
If you missed it yesterday, the females of the Belize District Female Football Competition will be returning to the MCC this coming Sunday to put on another exciting display of talented female footballers in action. The level of female football has really improved, with the women now fearlessly heading the ball and kicking with authority. All six teams in the competition saw action yesterday, and in the final match, Smart Millennium of Belize City barely held on to a 1-nil win over Ladyville Tornados to maintain their undefeated record at the top of the standings. The same teams meet each other again this Sunday.

In the afternoon opener yesterday, Lillian Joseph blasted 4 goals and her teammate Stephanie Duarte added another, as the Island Stars of Caye Caulker crushed Ladyville Orchids, 5-nil.

Game 2 was more competitive, and saw Hattieville Heats clipping Sandhill Untouchables, 1-nil, on a goal by Deandra Coote.

The nightcap featured the high flying Smart Millennium, who sported a perfect 7 wins from 7 outings going into yesterday’s encounter with Ladyville Tornados. Tornados is the stronger of the two Ladyville teams in the competition. Allan Wallace is their coach, but his assistant, Michael “Wataplat” Flowers, who is confined to home with a broken leg, still gives tips on “stragidy”. Kara Kisling gave Millennium the 1-nil first half lead, but that would be their only score, as Tornados battled all the way to the end with some outstanding play from Sheree Gillett in defense and Emilda Alarcon in goal. In the end, Millennium had to settle for the 1-nil victory. The return matches this Sunday at the MCC should be interesting.

This weekend schedule:
Sunday, October 30
1:00 p.m. – Island Stars vs Ladyville Orchids
2:30 p.m. – Hattieville Heats vs Sandhill Untouchables
4:00 p.m. – Smart Millennium vs Ladyville Tornados

After this Sunday, there will be one more week of back match games remaining in the regular season, in Caye Caulker, after which the top four teams go to the playoffs, where #1 and #4 seeded teams, and #2 and #3 seeds clash in two-game semifinal series. The winners then meet in a two-game championship series. (The female games are 35-minute halves.)

According to the official stats, leading scorers so far in the competition are Lillian Joseph of Caye Caulker with 10 goals, and Millennium’s Gianne Cayetano and Sheraine Tracy with 8 goals apiece.
