Griga happy: Wagiya and New Site Erei take early BPFL lead!

SportsGriga happy: Wagiya and New Site Erei take early BPFL lead!

It started with the usual Saturday night meeting at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence, this time with BOCA hosting a team of big name athletes known as the San Pedro Seahawks. You can look good on paper all you want but when it comes down to it, it?s all about your performance on the grass and how many goals you can get into the cage. Someone should have given the San Pedro Seahawks that advice. The Seahawks went down south and lost to BOCA, 3 ? 2.

Six minutes into the match the BOCA goalkeeper came out and tackled Elroy Kuylen, causing a penalty that was converted by Vallan Symms for the 1-nil lead. In the 20thminute BOCA was awarded a spot kick just outside the right apex of the San Pedro 18-yard box which Julio ?Chucky? Valle was able to bend inside. Seahawk midfielder Moises Hernandez tried a header to clear the ball away but instead deflected it into the goal for the equalizer.

Late in the half San Pedro defender, Vallan Symms went on an overlapping play where he served it into the eighteen-yard box. He found Christopher Hendricks, who unleashed a close range bomb for the Seahawks to take a 2?1 lead into the locker room.

In the middle of the second half, San Pedro substituted Edon ?Yellowman? Rowley for Oliver ?Lionheart? Hendricks. In a matter of minutes that substitution became a costly one for the Seahawks. ?Yellowman? tried to return a ball back into his defensive area in the 64thminute, but the pass was intercepted, creating a counter attack opportunity for BOCA. The ?contra golpe? resulted in a corner kick for the home team BOCA, who went for a quick start and caught the San Pedro defenders napping. The corner kick went across the top of the 18-yard box into Victor Morales, who placed a header in the back of the net for a 2?2 tie. A minute later, in the 65thWilmer Garcia was the recipient of a run-through pass, confusing defenders Wilson Brooks and Orland Lyons, who collided going for the ball. As a result Charlie Slusher committed to coming out and Wilmer Garcia placed it into an empty net for the 3?2 win.

In the baptism by the Calcutta Bulls of the new franchise in the league, FC Belize, FC Belize had to come from behind to pull off a 2-2 draw at the Calcutta field yesterday. Derwin Ennis escaped up the right side of the pitch six minutes into the game and was brought down inside the box. Ennis converted from the penalty spot for the early one-nothing lead.

Nineteen minutes later FC?s Rudolph Flowers received a pass from the right side inside the six-yard box and pushed it to the far right corner for the equalizer.

At the 25thminute mark Calcutta?s Rubiel ?El Matador? Mendez served up a pass to Sergio Gilharry down the middle, and the Bulls were able to capitalize, taking a 2?1 lead into the second half.

Five minutes into that half, Bull defender Walter Trejo misread a play that freed Jerome ?Jarro? James to blast it past the Calcutta goalkeeper for the 2?2 deadlock result. With the addition of Peter and Kenny Canul, along with Merlin Teck, the word out of Calcutta is that ?Mad Bull fever will be raging again this season.?

Down south in the Independence area, the second game of the weekend at the Michael Ashcroft almost didn?t go off as planned. Apparently there was some sort of miscommunication wherein the Placencia Pirates believed they would be playing the game at home in Placencia, but the BPFL had scheduled the game to be played at the Michael Ashcroft. When Wagiya arrived for a 4:00 p.m. scheduled game the Stadium was under lock and key with the Pirates waiting in Placencia. After a few phone calls and convincing, the Pirates took their boats from across the peninsula to run the grass at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium.

The match started at approximately 5:00 p.m. with what appeared to be an inexperienced Placencia squad, certainly not the one that had raised speculation and moved on to win the season opening marathon at the People?s Stadium. The first half was a helter-skelter type of ball on both sides with the Pirates running back and forth against a disorganized Wagiya FC. Neither team was displaying any real ?quality ball,? and for a moment it appeared hopelessly grim for both.

Wagiya?s head coach, Pablo Cacho, wasted no time in making wholesale substitutions. Dean Flores went in for Kurt ?Busta? Lambey and Dean Flowers went in for Alex Savery.

The changes provided some stability for the Wagiya middle and their attacks became more sustained and organized.
