Hurricane Bowser and Donald Trump!

FeaturesHurricane Bowser and Donald Trump!

I have never really liked Sundays. As a kid growing up, everything was closed on Sundays – no one on the streets, all the stores were closed, and you had to go to church. The only saving grace was matinee and Roy Rogers and Audie Murphy and Steve Reeves and Gene Autry. Another reason for disliking Sundays was also because on Monday mornings we had to go back to school. As a young man in the early 70s, my attitude about Sundays changed a lot because of Bird’s Isle and boxing. On Sunday mornings there would be boxing matches at the Island and it was always packed. I guess all the sinners who were not in church were there; it was always an event!

Belize had some very good boxers – Gilly Dunn, Tukku Tak, imported Fitzroy Guisseppi, one or two of the Bowers boys, others I can’t recall, and the inimitable Hurricane Bowser! He was a crowd favorite. Loud and breggin and gregarious and full of antics, a la Ali. He would taunt his opponents, trash talk to the crowd, and was always entertaining. When the bell rang he would come out of his corner like a hurricane, raining down blows on his opponent, in rapid succession. The roar of the crowd would be deafening at times, encouraging him to finish off his opponent. The problem, though, was that many of those jabs were powderpuff punches and did little damage to his opponent, invariably a Mexican. By the 8th or 9th round he would be exhausted, depleted of all that energy that drove him to heights of frenzy, and he would then fight to a draw, or succumb to the craftier fighter. They weren’t better fighters than he was, just more patient.

Donald Trump, con man extraordinaire, carnival barker, racist and obese, is enjoying the support of an ailing Republican Party. They are rallying behind him, mostly out of fear, but some of them also have that racist and xenophobic tendency he preaches. The lying and the noise is loud, encouraged by a very disingenuous press who is reaping the benefits of this abnormal phenomena! Then, come September and October, and the polls will start showing a significant increase in Biden’s numbers, and there it is!

Since Trump accidentally won in 2016, republicans have lost every election! Sure, they barely won the House in 2022, but that in itself was a short-lived victory. His party lost every special election, including in red states. He lost the House in 2018, the Senate in 2020, and again every special election that mattered. He’s a loser, a very sore loser that still can’t accept the results leading to his defeat in 2020! He is the dumbest idiot ever to assume the office of the presidency – unread, thin skinned, mean and unhinged! His followers also know that he’s a loser, but follow him blindly, and will follow him like lemmings – mostly out of fear, fear that America is browning – off the cliff and into hopefully, oblivion!

Brother Colin Hyde mentioned in one of his recent columns that my faith in his defeat, Trump’s, that is, in the coming elections might be wavering. Nothing can be farther from the truth. The louder the noise gets, means that the less republicans believe that they can win. Their latest fantasy is that Trump will win the black vote! Fantasy indeed. Trump hates black people, people of color in general! After the dust settles it will be evident that the black and Latino vote will go in the democrats’ direction. Sure, there will be a few people of color who don’t respect themselves enough, who will vote for the orange orangutan, but the majority will vote for democracy and common sense and love and respect, and decency, and compassion!

By the way, Hurricane Bowser won a lot of his fights. Trump has won 1 election, the only one he will ever win. All the noise, the press, the expectations, in the end a loser will always be a loser. Not Hurricane Bowser, Trump. So it is written, so let it be done!
