Immigration officer, businessman charged for evading customs duties

GeneralImmigration officer, businessman charged for evading customs duties
In June, we reported that an immigration officer had been busted trying to sneak US$11,400 belonging to a businessman through the Philip Goldson International Airport without clearing it through Customs, after the man came in on an American Airlines flight on Saturday afternoon, May 31.

The plan, police say, was for the immigration officer to “guide” the money through Customs, and then return it to the passenger, who would then give her a share of the money.

Today, that officer, 29-year-old Maria Guerra, and that businessman, Jose Aldana, 27, appeared in #7 Magistrate’s Court and were charged for evasion of customs duties. Aldana was separately charged for making a false declaration, in relation to the luggage that contained the currency.

They met bail of $5,000 each and will reappear in court on August 25. Attorney Michael Peyrefitte represented Guerra, while Carlo Mason represented Aldana.
