There comes a time in everyone’s life when you have to make decisions that are not only uncomfortable, but also could potentially make your life more difficult. Some of us allow fear to make us more compliant with things that are absolutely unacceptable. Some of us make excuses for the authoritarianism that is screaming at us every single day, from a spoilt, delusional old man who should have been put out to pasture a long time ago. The American brand is losing its luster faster than you can say the name, Rumpelstiltskin!
I have been told that because of my constant criticism of this autocratic, unhinged, corrupt president, I might have to suffer consequences. And? And what? Should we, as citizens of the United States, cower in fear and just take it? Should we just close our eyes and pretend that we will survive the hell that is coming for us every day, while he’s pretending to know what the hell he’s doing? Should we just stand idly by as his goons drag innocents off the streets or out of their homes or schools, and disappear them? Should we just remain quiet while he wreaks havoc on a once vibrant economy, the one he inherited, again, from his Democratic predecessor, and say nothing?
The damage that this bloated, tinted man has caused in the last 90 days will take a generation to recover from, in my opinion. I never thought that the American people would be foolish enough to give him this power, which is now unbridled and dangerous at the least. I made some embarrassing predictions about the last elections that I’m still being reminded of, often. What I was not wrong about are the consequences of his election.
He has invaded every space in our lives. He wants to control the way we think, the way we live, our freedom of choice, of speech, of education, of movement, of religion (that one I get, because he’s the chosen). Every word that comes out of his mouth is a lie, and he lies shamelessly about the simplest of things. He demands loyalty while betraying every citizen who voted for him with promises of safety and prosperity. We are neither safer nor prospering.
This country is in a mess, financially and emotionally. Trump fatigue is the number one cause for distress, not only in America, but around the world. His audaciousness matches the size of his waist. He bullies other countries, that is, until China and Zelenskyy put him in his place. No one, apart from a Republican congress, whose spines are like overcooked spaghetti, should bend their knees to this disaster of a president, who has no clue what running a country entails, especially not this country.
We should exercise our right to call out this naked emperor, without fear of retaliation, freely and as loudly as we can. We will be judged by the rest of the world for the leader we elected, our compliance with his madness, his descent into a totally delusional state that could cost us dearly, long after he is gone.
I have friends who are out there every weekend, protesting the devolving of our nation into an unrecognizable, ungovernable state in the future. If you care about your country, and I mean that universally, you should never just keep quiet when it starts drifting toward authoritarianism, oligarchy, kleptocracy! That is what is happening now in America, and it must be addressed, every day, while this convicted felon reigns.
