Italy to host 2021 Youth4Climate convention

HighlightsItaly to host 2021 Youth4Climate convention

BELMOPAN, Sun. Feb. 28, 2021– On February 9, 2021, the Mexican Embassy issued a press release that highlighted the “Youth4Climate: Driving Ambition” initiative of the Italian Embassy. Applications are now being invited from interested persons who wish to participate in a meeting for young people that addresses worldwide actions that impact climate change. The meeting is scheduled to take place in Milan, Italy, from September 28 through 30, 2021 and will follow the same format as the prestigious COP26 that is to be held in Glasgow, Scotland from November 1 through 12, 2021.

The Cop26 is an event in which experts, heads of state, climate experts, campaigners and entrepreneurs from across the globe will assemble to agree on and consolidate a coordinated plan of action to reduce the effects of climate change. The Youth4Climate is a COP26-like event for the young people who intend to serve as ambassadors in the battle against climate change. The cost of participation will be covered by Italy, the organizing country.

The application process will take place through the UN Submittable platform (https://un.submittable. com). All interested persons between ages 15 and 29 years, who actively contribute to alleviating the negative effects of climate change, are eligible. The selection questionnaire consists of six questions varying in structure. The answers to the open questions will be evaluated using a special evaluation table designed by the UN.

Selection of participants will be overseen by a special committee comprising the Office of the Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Youth, the Children and Youth Constituency to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change ( YOUNGO), and the Ministry of Environment of Italy. This committee will select up to 400 successful candidates who will be equitably distributed by gender, geographic location and social status. The ideal selection would ensure that two young persons are selected from the 197 participating countries; or at least 60 people from the 5 participating regions.

The Italian Minister of Environment, Sergio Costa, said, “The future of the planet is a challenge that mainly concerns young people, who in recent years have been standard-bearers in the battle for the fight against global warming and for environmental sustainability. From them came the strongest and most constructive stimuli for world leadership. We intend to give them a voice, prominence and visibility in view of the Milan climate conference at the end of 2021. We believe it is fundamental that the choices concerning tomorrow are shared, even expressed, by those who will have to live in tomorrow and will be responsible for the planet of tomorrow”.
