Jevon Mahler, 11, succumbs to leukemia

GeneralJevon Mahler, 11, succumbs to leukemia

Jevon?s mother, Patricia Lanza, 29, told Amandala of her last moments with her son, who, she said, was like her baby.

Lanza recalled that while she was at his bedside, Jevon said to her, ?Mommy I di have pain, but ah no gwen [die].?

According to Lanza, Jevon suddenly screamed out, and told her and his other visitors, his uncle, Emmeth Lanza, and one of his friends, Jermaile Elijio, 16, to call his doctor and nurses, because he was having more pain.

Jevon told his mother that he was getting very tired, and he wanted the doctor to give him something so that he would just die, because the pain was getting unbearable.

Patricia said that the doctor and the nurses, to whom she is very grateful, helped him a lot.

?They gave him medications until the end,? she said.

Patricia said that Jevon was very strong, because he fought very hard. He always wanted to work in an office. ?He always told me that he would grow up and work in an office, own a Mitsubishi and drive me around in it, me in the front seat and his girl in the back seat.

According to Patricia, the only reason why Jevon was unable to travel to Cuba to get his surgery performed, which would have been free of cost, was because she was unable to get a visa from the United States Embassy.

Patricia said that when his right arm could not move while he was ill in the hospital, he exercised on his own and was able to straighten it.

Jevon will be remembered as a brave fighter and the youth who always had older friends, as he was a child with big, positive dreams.

Jevon first appeared in an article in a Sunday, October 17, 2004, issue of the Amandala, titled, Leukemia patient, 10, kicked in face by circus horse; right eye damaged.

According to Patricia, he had lost his eyesight in the right eye, because a circus horse kicked him when he went to look at the horses in the compound of the Belize City Center.

Patricia said that he massaged his right temple and his eyesight came back.

Jevon was a Standard 3 student at the All Saints? Primary School.

Wakes were held last night and Tuesday night.

Jevon is survived by his mother, Patricia Lanza, 29; stepfather Wilton Garbutt, 60; older brother, Jafeth Bennett, 13; and younger sister, Tennecia Lanza, 9.

Today, funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Martin de Porres Roman Catholic Church in Lake Independence.
