Judiciary goes digital

GeneralJudiciary goes digital

BELMOPAN, Fri. Apr. 23, 2021– The courts of Belize have joined the Caribbean Agency for Justice Solutions (APEX) in the launch of a new electronic filing system, “Folio E-Filing”. This makes Belize a pioneer in the digital transformation of judicial systems in the Caribbean region.

The introduction of this platform to Belize’s courts was made possible through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Attorney General of Belize, Hon. Magali Marin Young, and the Caribbean Agency for Justice Solutions. The system utilizes the Curia Court Management Suite, an APEX product that was created to manage court operations. APEX has become a stakeholder in the digitization of courts since its establishment in 2016 by the Caribbean Court of Justice.

On April 26, 2021, Belize’s courts will host a launch event for the “Folio E-Filing” platform from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. This event will feature presentations from the Acting Chief Justice, Hon. Michelle Arana; the Acting President of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Minett Haffiz- Bertram; the Registrar General, Ms. Trienia Young, and Executive Director of APEX, Mr. Bevil Wooding.

This partnership with APEX will improve the efficiency of the provision of legal services in Belize and will allow for faster processing of court documents, resulting in a reduction of the time and money required for lawyers and litigants to access important files.

“The new system will allow users to securely access case files anywhere and at any time,” said Chief Justice Arana. “This is a significant step in our journey to modernizing our systems and equipping our Courts with the tools and capabilities to deliver quality justice services to all,” she said.

Those who intend to take part in the virtual launch may register at https://apexjustice.org/belizemediaevent. Jurists and attorneys from across the region are expected to join as Belize reaches an important milestone in the technological advancement of its Judiciary.
