Police continue to investigate the ghastly death of taxi operator Miguel Angel Aldana, 62, of Libertad Village, Corozal District, whose wounded body was found in his Ford Escort X-Wagon taxi three miles outside of Corozal Town on the Consejo Road last week.
Corozal police say one Miguel Montalvo, 34, and three of his friends came upon the body while returning from a fishing trip on Thursday evening, May 21. The body exhibited chop wounds to the head, back and face and was found outside the Escort (Corozal license plates D-2268).
Aldana, a Guatemalan originally from Melchor, at first settled in Benque Viejo Town and served for a long time in the Benque Taxi Association before moving to Libertad.
He would normally leave home around 7 o’clock to begin his day, then go back for lunch at noon. When he did not come home on Thursday, the family began to anticipate bad news – but not the kind they got later that day.
A post-mortem on the body confirmed that Aldana died from brain hemorrhaging as a result of trauma from machete wounds.
Aldana had valuables on his person during the attack, but only a gold chain was stolen from him, according to police.
Aldana, family members have indicated, had no known enemies and no reason to fear for his life. However, information to Amandala is that he is suspected of having transported the killer in a murder incident in Guatemala (there is no indication, yet, that he knew the intention of his passenger); allegations are that individuals, suspected to be from Guatemala, were in the village in the last few days looking for him – and may well have found him.
Corozal police today told us they are looking into that information, but are yet to verify it.
