BELIZE CITY, Fri. May 2, 2025

A nighttime shooting on Thursday, May 1, claimed the life of 61-year-old Carlos Avelar, a mechanic of the Kings Park area in Belize City.

According to police, Avelar was ambushed by two men on a motorcycle sometime after 8:00 p.m. that Thursday while he was at the corner of Sunrise Avenue and Coney Drive. Reports are indicating that after the motorcycle drew near to Avelar, one of the men pulled out a firearm and fired a barrage of bullets at him from close range before fleeing from the scene.

It is believed that Avelar was walking on the sidewalk in the direction of Body 2000 when he was wounded multiple times in his body and head.

Police found Avelar motionless on the pavement at the scene, and he was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.

A motive for the shooting has not yet been determined, and no suspects have yet been detained.
