One man is dead and another charged with his murder after a Christmas Day argument ended tragically in this southern village.
Police report that Pablo Escobar Castillo, 64, visited Basilio Calderon, 55, around 2 a.m. early December 25, to buy wine. The two conversed and drank for a while.
But their good times took a serious turn when Castillo accused Calderon of making advances on, and possibly having an affair with, his common-law wife, Sandra Jimenez, 18.
The two then began an argument, and Castillo armed himself with a piece of firewood.
Calderon muscled the firewood away from Castillo, then fatally injured Castillo with a strike to the head.
Pablo Escobar Castillo was pronounced dead on arrival at the Punta Gorda Hospital. Police subsequently arrested Calderon and charged him with Castillo’s murder.
