COROZAL TOWN, Wed. Dec. 12, 2018– Over this past weekend, Saturday, December 8, and Sunday, December 9, the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) held their 52nd annual general meeting at the ITVET in Corozal Town, at which they elected a new president. Marvin Mora, from the Belize Energy Workers Union (BEWU), who had been president in 2015-2017, succeeds Floyd Neal as president.

Clifford Martinez, from the Public Service Union (PSU), replaced Jacqueline Willoughby as the first vice president, while Lorelei Westby of the Belize Water Services Workers Union remains as second vice president.

Patrick Balan, also from BEWU, remains as general secretary, and Miguel Aguilar from Belize Workers Union replaced Fayne Nicascio as assistant general secretary. Jorge Mejia from the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) takes over as treasurer from Hubert Enriquez.

Lastly, Ella Waight from the Christian Workers Union (CWU) has become assistant treasurer in place of Sharon Fraser.

Several issues were discussed at the AGM, including the Occupational and Safety Health Bill that was introduced in the House of Representatives but has not been passed as yet, and matters relating to the ICJ.

At the NTUCB AGM there were also discussions about matters regarding the organization of the NTUCB, and a resolution was passed allowing members’ elections to be staggered so that there would always be persons in the executive body with previous experience.
