Without much fanfare, the 2022-2023 Closing Season of the Premier League of Belize (PLB) kicked off over the weekend with 3 of 4 scheduled games completed, the other pushed back to Wednesday night due to some management issues.

On Saturday night in San Pedro, it was home squad San Pedro Pirates FC prevailing, 2-0, over Progresso FC with a goal each from Mario Chimal (23’) and Facundo Garnier (43’).

Also on Saturday night, in Mango Creek, Independence, it was the visitors, Police Benque United coming away with the 1-0 victory over defending champion, Altitude FC.

The visitors were also victorious on Sunday at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga, where Port Layola FC from Belize City crushed Wagiya SC, 5-0, with 2 goals apiece coming from Michael Palacio (11’ & 14’) and Shawn Young (24’ & 45+4’), and the other from Jarret Davis (90+1’).

The last game in Week 1 of the Closing Tournament was played on Wednesday night at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium, where the Belmopan Bandits and Verdes FC played to a 0-0 draw.

Saturday, January 21
7:00 p.m. – San Pedro Pirates FC vs Wagiya SC – Ambergris Stadium
7:30 p.m. – Police Benque United vs Verdes FC – Marshalleck Stadium

Sunday, January 22
3:30 p.m. – Progresso FC vs Altitude FC – People’s Stadium
4:00 p.m. – Port Layola FC vs Bandits Sports – Marion Jones Stadium
